Deputy fired after filing for election
After filing to run as Moore County Sheriff, former Moore County Sheriff’s Deputy Eloy Ortiz was surprised to find out he would no longer be employed by the county.
“We figured I’d still have a job and it’s not going to bother me, but when I told him that I was running for Sheriff against him, he did tell me ‘I’m sorry you can’t work for me because you’re running against me for Sheriff,’” said Ortiz.
Moore County Sheriff Bo DeArmond said that the reason he let Ortiz go was because Ortiz disagrees with the way he runs his office.
“The deputy is an extension of the Sheriff and you have to trust that deputy to go out and put a good light to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office and the Sheriff,” said DeArmond. “If you can’t have that trust in somebody to do that then you have to do something.”
In fact we found out that this isn’t too uncommon in Sheriff’s departments in Texas. Randall County Sheriff Joel Richardson told us that most of the time the deputy will resign from the Sheriff’s department when they file for election. Sheriff DeArmond said it’s to keep a good working relationship within the office.
“My job as a sheriff is to provide city residents with the best law enforcement I can, and it’s hard to do that when you have division within the Sheriff’s office,” said DeArmond.
Regardless, Ortiz told us that he’s put this all behind him and he’s looking forward to the election.
“It’s not something for me to dwell on,” said Ortiz. “I moved on already. I’m letting it go because it’s already in the past and that’s where it’s going to stay. It’s not an issue right now. It’s just focus on running for office and getting it done…that’s it.”
Only time will tell what happens. The primary election will be March 4th. Aside from DeArmond and Ortiz, Tom Flood from the Dumas Police Department will also be running in the election.
